How to Choose the Best HDPE Barrels and Drums Supplier, Manufacturer, Exporter and Trader
A barrel that leaks, collapses or fails an inspection costs far more than the barrel. This guide explains how to choose between narrow mouth and open top HDPE barrels in 210, 235 and 250 litres and drums from 30 to 150 litres, how to check the material and the certification, and how to select a supplier that can ship the same quality every time.
Supplier, manufacturer, exporter or trader: who are you buying from?
Barrels are blow-moulded or rotationally moulded in factories with large machines, and quality depends on the resin, the machine and the control of wall thickness. Some companies own the machines, some buy from several moulders and some only export.
Hurain Engitech & Trade is a trading and export company: the HDPE barrels and drums we supply are manufactured to your specification by partner factories, and we handle inspection, export packing, documents and shipping. Because we buy in volume from those factories, our prices are typically lower than an end buyer would get approaching a factory alone. Ask which factory makes the barrel, for a sample, and who is responsible if a batch fails.
The barrels and drums in our range
Our range includes 210, 235 and 250 litre barrels, each in narrow mouth (tight head) and open top versions, plus HDPE drums from 30 to 150 litres. Colours are blue, white, black and natural, and the material is high-molecular-weight HDPE, with food-grade available.
Narrow mouth or open top?
A narrow mouth (tight head) barrel has two small bungs on the top and is used for liquids that are poured in and out through a pump or a tap: chemicals, solvents, edible oils and liquid food concentrates. It gives the best seal and the lowest evaporation. An open top barrel has a removable lid with a clamp ring and suits pulps, pastes, powders, granules and thick products that cannot be poured through a bung. Choose open top only when you must reach the product, because the lid is the weakest point for leaks.
Choosing the capacity: 210, 235 or 250 litres
The 210 litre barrel matches the standard 55 US gallon drum used for oils and chemicals, and it fits the filling lines, racks and pallets built around that size. The 235 and 250 litre barrels give more volume for the same footprint, which saves freight and handling for low-density products, but check that your filling line, pallets and stacking racks can take the larger size. Stackability depends on the wall thickness and the ribs, so ask for the stacking load in the specification.
Material and food grade
HDPE is chosen for its chemical resistance, light weight and impact strength. High-molecular-weight resin gives better strength and stress-crack resistance. For food, edible oils and pharmaceutical intermediates, specify food-grade virgin resin and ask for a statement on food contact such as FDA compliance. Never accept recycled resin for food or for dangerous goods. Natural and white barrels show contamination more easily, and blue and black are common for chemicals. Black carries extra UV protection for outdoor storage.
UN rating and dangerous goods
If the barrel will carry dangerous goods by road, sea or air, it must be UN-approved, with the rating marked on the barrel, for example 1H1 for a narrow mouth barrel and 1H2 for an open top one. The rating depends on the product and the packing group, so confirm the requirement with your shipper before ordering. We can supply UN-rated barrels on request. Do not use an unrated barrel for a regulated chemical, because the carrier can refuse it and the insurance may not pay.
What to put in every enquiry
A precise enquiry prevents a wrong shipment:
- Capacity (litres) and type: narrow mouth or open top
- Product to be filled, to confirm the chemical resistance
- Material: standard or food-grade virgin HDPE
- Colour
- UN rating if the product is regulated
- Weight of the empty barrel in kilograms, which shows how heavy the wall is
- Closures: bungs, gaskets, clamp ring type
- Quantity, palletising and the destination port
Quality checks to ask for
Check the following before you pay and again on receipt:
- Empty weight against the specification, as a thin wall is the most common shortcut
- Wall thickness at several points, and the bottom and chime thickness
- Leak test, drop test and stacking test, with a UN test report if rated
- Bung threads, gaskets and the clamp ring fit
- Surface defects such as cracks, weld lines, black spots or unevenness
- Cleanliness inside, especially for food products
Packing, nesting and shipping
Barrels are bulky, so freight is a large share of the landed cost. Container loading depends on the diameter and the stacking, so ask how many barrels fit in a container and whether they will be shipped empty on pallets or nested. Make sure the closures are packed inside the barrels or in separate cartons and are counted on the packing list. The export documents normally include the commercial invoice, the packing list, the certificate of origin and the bill of lading, plus test and UN reports on request.
What decides the price
Price depends on the weight of resin per barrel, the grade, the colour, the UN rating, the closures, the quantity and the freight. Because resin is the main cost, a lighter barrel is cheaper but may not pass the stacking or drop test. Compare quotations on the empty weight and the test reports, not on the price alone.
A checklist for choosing your barrel supplier
Before a first order, confirm the following:
- A written specification and a quotation that repeats it
- A sample or detailed photographs of the actual stock before you pay
- Photographs of the packing and of the container loading before dispatch
- A pre-shipment inspection by your own agent or a third party for large orders
- Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading, plus test reports where your market asks
- A written replacement or credit policy if the goods do not match the order
- Resin grade and food-contact statement in writing
- UN rating on the barrel, if required
Start with a trial order of one container, fill and store a few barrels as you would in service, and scale the order when they have passed.
